Norway’s Pilgrim Way
By Stein Thue

The old pilgrim way from Oslo to Trondheim was rededicated in 1997, and modern pilgrims are now walking along the old paths.

The path is marked with posts carrying the Pilgrim Way logo. These have been erected in places where the path changes direction, and by sights and attractions along the way.

Relatively few pilgrims set off to walk the entire 600 kilometres (360 miles) from Oslo to Trondheim. You will need approximately one month to do that.
Many choose to walk a shorter part of the path.  One of the more popular routes is the stretch from Dovre to Trondheim (approximately 240 kilometres or 150 miles).

Plan in advance
It is smart to book your lodgings in advance. If you are an experienced outdoorsman or woman, you can walk on your own. Many choose, however, to join a group with a pilgrim guide. These walks take place in July each year. To sign up, please contact Pilgrim Minister Pastor Rolf Synnes.

This walk – over the majestic Dovre mountains – to Trondheim, will take you approximately 12 days, depending on how far you choose to walk each day.

Some stages of the path may be physically demanding, but you can choose your own pace. You can even book car or bus transportation for some stages. View stage plan

Your destination
The shrine of Norway's Saint Olav in Trondheim was the major destination for pilgrimages in the Nordic countries during the Middle Ages. King Olav Haraldson (995-1030) was honoured not only in Norway, but also in many European countries for hundreds of years.
